  10.     Students from three Southern California schools will have 
  11.  
  12. an opportunity to talk to shuttle astronaut Ron Parise via ham 
  13.  
  14. radio during mission STS-35 set to launch on May 30.
  15.  
  16.     Through efforts coordinated between the Jet Propulsion 
  17.  
  18. Laboratory's Amateur Radio Club, the JPL Teacher Resource Center
  19.  
  20. and the American Radio Relay League Inc., Owen Robbins and two 
  21.  
  22. other teachers from elementary schools in southeastern Los Angeles
  23.  
  24. County's ABC Unified School District were selected to conduct an
  25.  
  26. amateur radio connection with the shuttle crew.
  27.  
  28.     Students who wished to participate submitted questions they
  29.  
  30. would like to ask of Parise. One student and question were chosen
  31.  
  32. from each school. 
  33.  
  34.     Parise is a payload specialist member of the seven-person crew
  35.  
  36. which will fly the nine-day Astro-1 mission. A senior scientist in
  37.  
  38. the Space Observatories Department, Computer Science Corporation
  39.  
  40. in Silver Spring, Maryland, Parise is a member of the research team
  41.  
  42. for the ultraviolet telescope, one of the instruments of the Astro
  43.  
  44. payload, and is also a licensed amateur radio operator (WA4SIR).
  45.  
  46.     Astro-1 is an astrophysics observatory which will operate from
  47.  
  48. within the cargo bay of space shuttle Columbia during the STS-35 
  49.  
  50. mission.
  51.  
  52.     Sixth grader Dillon Matthew will be asking his question from
  53.  
  54. Stowers Elementary School in Cerritos. Advising instructor from 
  55.  
  56.  
  57. Stowers is Robbins, the person principally responsible for 
  58.  
  59. arranging the link-up for all three schools.
  60.  
  61.      Robbins first contacted JPL to find someone to talk 
  62.  
  63. with over the radio about earthquakes. Through Peter McClosky of 
  64.  
  65. the JPL Teacher Resource Center, he arranged for Katherine 
  66.  
  67. Hutton, staff seismologist at Caltech, to participate in an 
  68.  
  69. interview. Following the interview Robbins and McClosky decided to
  70.  
  71. set up a weekly program during which JPL/Caltech employees are 
  72.  
  73. asked questions about their work by elementary and middle school
  74.  
  75. students. 
  76.  
  77.     They call the program the JPL Amateur Radio Club Educators'
  78.  
  79. Career Net. The students use Robbins's radio and license and talk
  80.  
  81. to JPL via the JPL Amateur Radio Club's publicly available 
  82.  
  83. repeater. Through the development of the program, both Owen Robbins
  84.  
  85. and his wife, Judith Robbins, have become members of the JPL 
  86.  
  87. Amateur Radio Club.
  88.  
  89.     The Career Net frequency is 2024.04 MHZ. Anyone is welcome 
  90.  
  91. to listen in on the conversations which are held on Thursday 
  92.  
  93. afternoons from 1:20 to 2:20. These interviews will be suspended
  94.  
  95. during summer break, and will resume again this fall.
  96.  
  97.     Robbins's call sign is KB6WYU. The other two teachers also 
  98.  
  99. have ham radio licenses, are participating in the shuttle 
  100.  
  101. interview and regularly take part in the Career Net program.
  102.  
  103.     These teachers are Judith Robbins, call letters KB6WYV,

  105. of Cerritos Elementary School and Larry Mazur, call letters KC6AFJ,
  106.  
  107. of Carver Elementary School. Chimene Mata, fifth grader, was 
  108.  
  109. selected from Cerritos School. Fourth grader Lisa Gonzales will 
  110.  
  111.  
  112. represent Cerritos Elementary School.

  114.     The shuttle interview will take place at 3 p.m. PDT on day 
  115.  
  116. six of the STS-35 shuttle mission.
